### Meaning

1. (polite, euphemism) I disagree with you, or I think you are wrong — said politely before a criticism.
2. (literal) showing the respect that is deserved.

### In the lessons

Used in meetings, debates, interviews and formal letters in all English-speaking countries to soften disagreement; often followed by a strong criticism, so it can sound rude or sarcastic. A sign that a «but» is coming.

### Examples

- (debate) With all due respect, minister, that is not true.
- (office) With all due respect, I think the plan won't work.
- (sport) With all due respect to the other team, we were better.
- (chat) with all due respect, your opinion on pizza is wrong
- (sitcom) "With all due respect…" "Here we go."
- (literal) The soldiers were buried with all due respect.

### Note

Trap: it often comes just before a disagreement or insult, so it can sound sarcastic. «Due» = deserved, proper. In literal use it really means with full respect.
