## In Jewish tradition

It is a cry of sorrow in an ancient song about the fall of Moab. The prophets use "Woe" to warn people or leaders who do wrong, and also as a cry of personal pain.

**Interpretation.** Tradition reads the prophets' woes as warnings meant to make people turn back to God, not only as threats.
