### In the lessons

A story and poetry word, used in fairy tales, hymns and old books: «wondrous sights», «a wondrous story». Alice's Wonderland is full of wondrous creatures. In the Bible and hymns, God's «wondrous works» are praised. In science, nature's wondrous patterns (snowflakes, rainbows) can be explained and still amaze.

## In Jewish tradition

The psalms use it for God's amazing works, such as those at the Red Sea.

**Interpretation.** In Sefer Yetzirah the "wondrous ways of wisdom" are the thirty-two paths of creation, the ten numbers and twenty-two letters. The psalms' wondrous works are read as God's miracles for Israel.

- Midrash Tanchuma 1:5 on \[Genesis 1:1\], Zohar 1:3a inter alia.\] \[note 8: Though the phrase is usually translated the ‘Thirty-Two Paths’, I find that the alliteration of ‘Wondrous Ways of Wisdom’ neatly approximates the SY’s choice of poetic vocabulary.
