### In the lessons

In first aid lessons you learn to clean a wound, press on it to stop bleeding, and cover it with a plaster or bandage. In stories, heroes and animals are wounded in battles, and words can wound feelings. In everyday life you wind up toys, wool and clocks: «I wound the string around the kite stick». Phrases: «a deep wound», «clean the wound», «wounded pride», «wound up» (wound tightly, or informal: very nervous or annoyed).

A homograph: same spelling, two sounds and meanings. «Woond» = injury; «wownd» = past of wind. «Wounded» is used for injuries from a weapon or accident and also for hurt feelings. First-aid tip: wash hands, clean with water, cover, and tell an adult; deep wounds need a doctor.

## In Jewish tradition

Interpretation: "Wound for wound" is read by the rabbis as a rule for payment of damages, not literal revenge. Deuteronomy 32:39 teaches that God both wounds and heals. In the Psalms a wound can be a sickness or a hurt of the heart, and God is the one who heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds. In the primary lessons: In first aid lessons you learn to clean a wound, press on it to stop bleeding, and cover it with a plaster or bandage.
